The Netherlands is taking another significant step in cellular agriculture with the establishment of two new scale-up facilities. These facilities enable companies to scale their production processes without making substantial investments in infrastructure. The initiative is a collaboration between the government, research institutions, and leading companies.
The Biotechnology Fermentation Factory (BFF) in Ede is fully dedicated to precision fermentation. This facility, set up in partnership with NIZO Food Research, provides companies with a unique opportunity to quickly transition from product development to scaling up. “Our facilities accelerate the protein transition and support innovation,” emphasizes Nikolaas Vles, general director of NIZO.
In Maastricht, Cultivate at Scale (CaS), a new independent scale-up facility, has opened its doors, with support from Mosa Meat. The focus here is on scaling cellular cultivation processes, including the production of cultured meat. “This facility helps companies move from R&D to large-scale production,” states Jaco van der Merwe, managing director of CaS.
The Netherlands remains a frontrunner in cellular agriculture, thanks to strategic investments and collaboration between public and private sectors. With these facilities, the country strengthens its position as a global hub for innovative and sustainable food production.
