Replacing conventional products with an organic alternative is the most effective measure to boost the consumption and production of organic. For this reason, on 21 April 2023, Bionext published the 'Bio Top 40': a list of 40 fresh products from Dutch soil that can be completely replaced by organic products.
With this initiative, Bionext wants to take necessary steps together with supermarkets to contribute to the goal of 15% organic acreage by 2030. Fully replacing product lines helps consumers in their choice, as the choice has already been made for them. The products in the Bio Top 40 have been selected based on availability, quality and price elasticity. The latter means a passable price difference between organic and conventional.
"What farmers currently lack is market perspective. Only when demand increases will farmers, encouraged by the government and with financial support from banks, be able to switch to the organic production method. As long as you leave the choice solely to consumers, we are not going to reach 15% organic acreage," said Michaël Wilde, director of Bionext. Read more in his blog here.
