Dutch supermarkets are committed to creating a healthier and more sustainable country. After five years of intensive research, they, along with the University of Groningen (RUG) and Wageningen University & Research (WUR), presented the findings of the 'Transparent, Healthy, and Sustainable' program. The results were unveiled in The Hague at the end of May.
This scientific research involved eight public and private organizations, including the Centraal Bureau Levensmiddelenhandel (CBL) and major supermarket chains such as Albert Heijn, ALDI, Jumbo, Lidl, and Superunie. This unique collaboration provided the supermarket sector an opportunity to better identify challenges and seek solutions for a healthier and more sustainable product range.
The program consisted of ten sub-studies. It examined what drives consumer choices and how supermarkets can encourage healthier and more sustainable decisions. The role of transparency about product information was a key focus. Food choice logos like Nutri-Score can assist consumers, but multiple factors influence their behavior. The results have been published in the report 'Transparent, Healthy, and Sustainable.'
"The results provide valuable insights for taking new steps," said Marc Jansen, General Director of the CBL. Supermarkets benefit from customers making informed choices within the extensive food selection. The supermarket sector embraces the research findings and continues to work towards a healthier and more sustainable Netherlands.
