Most Dutch know little about plant-based protein sources

  • 27 May 2024

Research from Green Chef shows that 67% of Dutch people do not know that proteins can also come from plant-based sources, despite our diet having a significant impact on the planet. Only 15% of respondents get most of their proteins from plant-based sources. These figures highlight the need for awareness and change in our dietary choices to improve both our health and the environment.

Dietitian Daniet Shachar from Green Chef emphasizes the importance of the protein transition, shifting from animal to plant-based proteins. Two-thirds of Dutch people do not know that proteins can also come from plant-based foods. Plant-based proteins, such as legumes and nuts, can help reduce environmental impact. Green Chef and WWF-NL aim to raise awareness about the impact of food choices and contribute to more sustainable eating habits.

Different protein sources

Although one-third of Dutch people know that proteins can also be derived from plant-based sources, behavior does not reflect this knowledge. Only 15% of respondents get most of their proteins from plant-based sources. Women are more aware of plant-based alternatives (37%) compared to men (29%). Additionally, 26% of women see a protein-rich diet as a way to achieve health and fitness goals, compared to 16% of men.

Potential of plant-based proteins

The research shows that nearly a quarter of Dutch people are willing to replace animal proteins with plant-based proteins to reduce their ecological footprint. The Health Council concludes that a shift to more plant-based proteins is better for the environment and healthier for most people in the Netherlands. Potentially, this shift could reduce the environmental impact of our dietary patterns by 25%.

According to Shachar, animal proteins are often seen as an easy way to get a lot of protein, which leads to plant-based protein sources being chosen less frequently. It is important to raise awareness about the possibilities offered by plant-based foods.
