Primeale United is introducing an innovative Controlled Atmosphere (CA) preservation technique to ensure year-round supply security of Brussels sprouts. This method extends the shelf life of Moroccan Brussels sprouts and enables smooth seasonal change.
In CA storage, the air in the storage room is adjusted: less oxygen and more carbon dioxide. This extends shelf life, allowing Moroccan sprouts to be delivered for longer without loss of quality or taste.
Due to a wet spring, sprouts were planted later this year, resulting in temporarily limited availability. The CA storage technology allows Primeale United to bridge this period until the European sprouts season begins. They recently launched the season in France, with 15 hectares of their own growing land around Nantes. Harvest also starts in the Netherlands this month. Thanks to the combination of CA storage and supply from both France and the Netherlands, Primeale United can continuously supply sprouts.
The CA technique, developed by Primeale United in cooperation with a fruit preservation expert, is unique for sprouts. After successful small-scale tests, it is now being rolled out commercially.
