Food poverty in the Netherlands is increasing

  • 08 August 2023

Energy suppliers and financial experts warn that some 165,000 families may be in cash poverty. This is due to the discontinuation of support measures for those struggling to meet their energy bills. The government measure introduced earlier to dampen excessive bills is set to expire at the end of the year, according to the Red Cross.

Although heating may be off for the moment, temperatures will soon drop and energy needs will rise. The Red Cross expresses concern for the upcoming period. Many Dutch people will not be able to pay their bills at the end of the month. For many families, food is already a major concern. An increasing number of households do not have enough budget for healthy meals. With expected high gas prices this winter, the situation becomes even more dire for many.

Last year, the Red Cross noted a significant increase in requests for food assistance. Prices for food continue to rise, with an increase of more than 11% this month, according to CBS statistics. Healthy eating threatens to become a luxury. Ending government support risks worsening the situation for many people.

The Red Cross gets involved where the need is great. Each month, the organization distributes approximately 32,000 grocery cards and 5,000 breakfast packages through local partners. Collaborations with the Youth Education Fund and the Ministry of Education, Culture & Science have provided school meals and extra support for parents, benefiting a total of 11,7837 schoolchildren. The fact that food aid is needed in a prosperous country like the Netherlands remains mind-boggling.
