Shorter wait times for grid connections

  • 10 July 2026

Grid congestion is one of the biggest challenges facing the Netherlands. Right now, it is putting the brakes on the economy and sustainability efforts. Grid operators and market parties are now taking a major step forward. They are launching an updated capacity management contract (CSC). This paves the way for faster, higher-capacity grid connections for companies. As a result, business owners will not have to wait as long for grid capacity.

Rewarding flexible grid use

Expanding the electrical grid takes years. That makes flexible grid usage crucial. Congestion management plays a key role in this. Grid operators make agreements with customers about their electricity use during peak hours. The grid operator typically gives a day's notice before a peak occurs. Companies must then temporarily adjust their consumption. This means stopping, limiting, or actually ramping up their usage. The customer receives compensation for this.

A better outlook for businesses

Since its introduction in 2025, the CSC has proven difficult to implement in practice. The business perspective was not sufficiently integrated into the terms. Now, the contract conditions have been clarified and made more balanced. While these discussions used to require months of talks, the contract is now much easier to read. It is more straightforward and better suited for everyday business operations. Custom solutions remain possible for specific situations. Alternative arrangements can be discussed in consultation with the grid operator.

Moving out of the queue faster

These improvements aim to lead to quicker agreements between business owners and grid operators. This accelerates the implementation of congestion management. Parties that would otherwise remain stuck on the waiting list will get their connections sooner. The updated contract is available on the Partners in Energie website. Major market organizations such as VNO-NCW, MKB-Nederland, and VEMW helped develop it. Moving forward, they will continue to work on further improvements and guidelines.
