On 1 September, Prof. Jan Jonker (Radboud University) will give the Sustainable Speech from the Throne of 2020 in The Hague as part of the 22nd edition of Sustainable Tuesday. In his speech he will set out a vision for the coming decade on the basis of a number of necessary transitions. He does this by means of seven 'crowbars'. If you want to be there then that is possible (completely free of charge). The broadcast starts at 14.15; the speech lasts 17 minutes. This is the link to the lifestream.
The past decade has shown that although we talk a lot and increasingly about complex issues of sustainability, circularity and inclusiveness, action with real impact is lagging behind. As a result, we are incrementally muddling through with sub-optimal solutions and this is not in line with the ambition that we (should) have as a country and as citizens, nor with the urgency of the issues. Moreover, the recent dramatic pandemic has as a side effect that we are looking for a return to the old normal. That takes a lot of time, a lot of money and makes us progress even less. Things have to change, but how? In this speech, Jonker presents a vision of how we can fundamentally rebuild the Netherlands to address these desired transitions by means of seven 'crowbars'.
Professor Jonker is known as an activist professor of business administration at the intersection of theory and practice. He recently published his 35th book, in addition to all possible scientific and popular publications. With different teams he wrote the bestsellers 'Doing Sustainable Thinking', 'New Business Models' and 'Circular Organizing'. For him, the question of sustainability is a social and economic task that will only come about if we make fundamental changes. This speech is extra special to him because it is also his farewell speech as a professor.
