Renewi invests in recycling for expired products

  • 17 June 2022

Renewi Organics has commissioned a new expired products (ODP) installation at its Amsterdam site. The new ODP line processes faster and more materials. This installation receives and processes the over-dated products and food waste with the aim of eventually producing BIO-LNG and BIO-CO2 and generating heat or electricity. The line can process up to 60 tonnes of food waste per hour. With the deployment of this installation, Renewi processes over 65,000 tonnes of organic waste streams into new raw materials on an annual basis.

Increasing recycling percentage

The investment in the ODP line fits in with Renewi's ambitious plan to increase the recycling percentage from 65% to 75% by 2025. The aim is to extract as much value as possible from waste and thus make a substantial contribution to the circular economy.

Additional sustainable benefits

The processed ODP stream is further fermented in our own fermentation plant at the same location. This fermentation process creates BIO gas, part of which is supplied back to Amsterdam's electricity network. This provides over 12,000 households with electricity and heat. Another product that is made from this is BIO-LNG, a sustainable transition fuel that is extracted from the biogas of the organic waste streams. BIO-LNG provides a considerable reduction in CO2 emissions compared to regular fuels and is used to make heavy road transport more sustainable, among other things.
