QS quality label launches mandatory animal health advisory

  • 26 February 2024

The German livestock industry is taking a significant step forward in improving animal health and welfare. The QS quality seal, known for its strict standards, is introducing a mandatory animal health advisory for pork producers. This new approach, starting in mid-2024, responds to the need for higher health standards in the sector. This initiative is important not only for Germany but also has implications for the Dutch market, given the close trade relations and shared focus on high-quality standards in livestock farming.

The QS quality seal, a benchmark in the meat industry, is committed to improving the health of pork. This will be achieved through specially trained advisors who, in collaboration with the farmers' own veterinarians, will implement practical improvements. This move is particularly aimed at pork producers who stand out negatively in health statistics. This initiative aims to improve not only animal health but also the overall image of the livestock sector, which often unfairly attracts negative media attention.

Individualized approach

Each farmer receives a tailor-made approach. Health data from slaughterhouses play a crucial role in identifying farms that need improvement. Farmers with substandard performance are identified and then receive guidance from a QS advisor. These advisors work together with the farmers and their veterinarians to realize tangible improvements. Should voluntary progress not be made, written advice will be given, which is also recorded in the QS system.

External monitoring and sanctions

An external party plays a key role in this process. Pork farms are observed for at least six months. If there is a lack of progress, a special audit follows, after which the farmer in question must seek advice from a QS-certified expert. This joint approach, including the pig veterinarian, should lead to practical solutions and better animal health. Important agreements and progress are recorded in a protocol and stored in the QS database. Farmers who refuse to participate or fail to show improvements risk sanctions, such as exclusion from supplying under the QS quality seal.
