Public organizations set course for protein transition

  • 09 June 2023

Wageningen University & Research reveals that public organizations may be the key to accelerating the shift from animal to plant-based proteins. The research shows that governments, schools, universities, hospitals and prisons have huge opportunities to accelerate this transition through their procurement policies. Recommendations include creating support and positive experiences with plant-based eating, as well as providing financial incentives.

Although the need for the protein transition is well known, the shift to plant-based foods has been slow. Recent figures show only a slight increase in the share of plant-based proteins. The study highlights that public organizations can set a standard through food procurement, as this is where significant amounts of food are consumed.

Interview study

An interview study identified opportunities and barriers to promoting plant-based consumption. Awareness within public organizations is essential, as is investment in the protein transition and its inclusion in policy and contract requirements. A diverse, healthy and sustainable supply, tailored to the needs of the target audience, is important.

Governments

Policymakers can facilitate the introduction of the protein transition by including it in policy and offering financial incentives. Governments can set an example by taking steps toward more plant-based offerings in their own procurement policies and by supporting public organizations.

This study highlights the crucial role of public organizations in promoting the protein transition and offers concrete action points for implementation. Together, we can accelerate the shift to plant-based food, with positive consequences for health and sustainability.
