ProVeg commits to doubling bean consumption by 2028

  • 12 June 2023

ProVeg International announces a collaboration with leading organizations to jointly double global consumption of beans, peas, legumes, lentils and pulses by 2028. This collaboration marks the launch of the Beans is How campaign, which aims to raise awareness about beans and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the food system.

Beans emit only 10 percent of the harmful greenhouse gases that some animal foods cause. They are rich in nutrients, including protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, and are an affordable alternative to meat, averaging $1 per 500 grams. Jasmijn de Boo, CEO of ProVeg, emphasizes that beans are an ideal choice for nutritious, affordable and climate-friendly meals.

Initiatives

The Beans is How campaign includes several initiatives, including sharing delicious bean recipes, encouraging people to grow their own beans and launching a "menu challenge" to promote bean dishes on menus of restaurants, caterers, cafes, schools and other food providers with the hashtag #bonenophetmenu.

ProVeg is supported by global organizations, including Google, The World Bean Council, the Bezos Earth Fund, the United Nations Foundation and the Kraft Heinz Company. This coalition of game-changers from various sectors will collectively make an impact to increase bean consumption worldwide.
