Plant4Texture: choice for meat lovers and flexitarians alike

  • 07 July 2023

KNS introduces Plant4Texture, an innovative hybrid product that allows butchers to offer high-quality artisanal products to flexitarians. By using Plant4Texture, consumers can enjoy the taste and texture of butcher's meat while consuming less meat.

With the growing popularity of flexitarianism, with more than half of consumers saying they want to eat less meat, the introduction of hybrid products is an important step forward. Plant4Texture meets the need for consumers to eat less meat while continuing to enjoy high-quality butcher products. It offers butchers a differentiator in the marketplace.

The idea for Plant4Texture originated at the 2018 General Assembly of Members, where KNS members agreed to explore new revenue models. In collaboration with SVO vocational training food and Wageningen University & Research, research was conducted on Plant4Texture. The goal was to develop recipes that allow butchers to make products that meet the needs of consumers who want to eat less meat.

Plant4Texture offers several advantages for butchers. It can be made with existing equipment and can be prepared traditionally with its own created texture and flavor. The product addresses the needs of flexitarians and fits into a responsible diet. In addition, it contributes to sustainability by emitting about 70% less greenhouse gases. This sets it apart from other suppliers.

The basic product for butchers consists of vegetable and egg proteins, also called "alternative proteins. Butchers can choose between loose raw materials in powder form or an already prepared emulsion in piles. These piles can be ground directly with meat. The powders are suitable for sausages that still need to be cooked, such as grill sausage and smoked sausage.

Plant4Texture offers butchers an opportunity to respond to the growing demand for hybrid products while fulfilling the wishes of consumers who want to eat less meat.
