Dutch food industry prices hit record levels in 2022. Overall, sales prices rose 20.5 percent due to high energy prices, scarce raw materials and the Ukraine war. In both domestic (+21.7 percent) and foreign markets (+19.3 percent), food prices rose sharply. Compared with January 2022, food prices rose 17.4 percent in January 2023, while in January last year, food prices had already risen 14.7 percent. This is according to an analysis of recent CBS data by our editors.

Edible oils and fats also became significantly more expensive last year: on average, sales prices went up by 29 percent. However, here the peaks were mainly in the first half of the year, while price increases fell sharply in the second half. December saw the lowest price increase of the year (+18 percent), June the highest (+37.4 percent).

Bread remained relatively cheap
