Only 50% of political parties serious about nutrition

  • 09 March 2022

Healthy food and attention to a healthy, sustainable living environment are only on about half the political agendas in the municipal elections. And the approach of the parties to these issues is very fragmented. This is evident from an analysis that the Voedingscentrum commissioned from the 30 largest municipalities. For the analysis, 120 election programmes were examined, per municipality those of the four largest parties. What are their ambitions for healthy food and a healthy and sustainable environment?

Lack of focus

The proposed measures are sometimes very diverse and there is a lack of focus. For example, one party focuses on raising awareness and providing information about making healthy choices. The other party focuses on combating food waste. In about 40 programmes, there is special attention for youth and the role of schools, often in combination with social equality. For example, by pleading for a healthy and affordable offer in school and sports canteens. Or by introducing teaching programmes on nutrition. In 8 programmes, the plan for (the expansion of) a local prevention agreement can be found.

Clear vision and plans indispensable

The Voedingscentrum believes it is necessary for more municipalities to develop a clear vision and plans for an integral approach to a healthy living environment. With 'nutrition' as an indispensable theme.
