On the way to PlanetProof grows in crop production and trade

On the way to PlanetProof strengthened its position within the agricultural supply chain in 2025. The certification scheme expanded its reach in crop production. More trading companies also became involved. In the livestock sector, the focus was on environmental and animal welfare measures. Developments vary by sector but affect the entire supply chain, from growers and livestock farmers to traders and supermarkets.

Open-field production expands

The certified area in Europe increased by 4 percent. This brought the total to 61,941 hectares. That is 2,337 hectares more than in 2024. Within open-field production, the area grew by 4 percent. This brought the total to 57,290 hectares. Potatoes, vegetables, fruit, grains, and herbs contributed most to the increase. Together, these crops added 2,310 hectares.

Outside the Netherlands, the certified area increased by 6 percent. The total reached 14,140 hectares. Spain added 456 hectares, bringing its total to 8,253 hectares. Italy recorded 27 percent growth and reached 1,738 hectares. In the Netherlands, the certified area increased by 3 percent. This brought the total to 47,801 hectares. Seventy percent of the area used for protected fruit and vegetable production is now certified.

Livestock farmers take further steps

The number of certified dairy farmers fell from 800 to 763. The area covered by certified dairy farming also decreased by 2 percent. In the poultry sector, the number of participating farms fell from 30 to 27.

Participants invested in measures to improve comfort inside barns. The minimum requirement for protein produced on the farm’s own land also increased. It rose from 50 to 55 percent.

At least 5 percent of the area on participating dairy farms consists of herb-rich grassland. Sown grassland featuring legumes, for example, accounts for at least 12.5 percent.

More trading companies certified

The number of certified B2B trading companies increased by 18 percent. According to On the way to PlanetProof, demand for certified products remains high. Supermarket chains continue working to make these products widely accessible.

The criteria for plant-based products and eggs were also revised in 2025. Growers, experts, and independent advisers contributed to the revision.
