NVWA tightens meat sector supervision from 2025

  • 21 October 2024

The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) is working hard to improve its supervision and ensure the organisation is future-proof. Thanks to additional financial resources provided by the Rutte IV cabinet, the NVWA has made significant progress in strengthening its foundation. This includes hiring nine hundred new employees to address urgent policy issues and updating its supervision methods.

Revised supervision in the meat sector

A key step in enhancing oversight is the revision of the system for inspections and supervision in the meat sector. The focus here is on safeguarding animal welfare, food safety, and animal health. From January 2025, the official assistants and coordinators of the Kwaliteitskeuring Dierlijke Sector (KDS) will be integrated into the NVWA, leading to more effective supervision at slaughter locations.

Increase in supervision costs from 2025

In the near future, business costs will rise due to adjustments in the NVWA's fee structure. This increase is driven by higher labour costs resulting from the new collective labour agreement (CAO) and will be implemented from January 2025. At the same time, the NVWA is exploring how these costs can best be passed on, particularly within the red meat sector.
