NewCold opens innovation hub and off-grid frozen warehouse

  • 16 October 2025

NewCold, the world’s third-largest player in temperature-controlled food logistics, marked a double milestone on October 15, 2025. King Willem-Alexander officially opened the company’s new Global Innovation and Support Center (GISC) in Breda. Later that day, NewCold also celebrated the opening of Europe’s largest fully off-grid frozen warehouse in Dinteloord. Two milestones that highlight the company’s growth, collaboration, and innovative strength within the food industry.

Innovation hub in Breda

The GISC in Breda will serve as NewCold’s global center for technological innovation, operations, and support. “This center is more than just our new headquarters,” said Bram Hage, CEO of NewCold. “The GISC is our innovation engine—where advanced automation, AI, and robotics drive the transformation of refrigerated food storage and logistics.”

The bright white building on Oosterhoutseweg was designed with a strong focus on sustainability and employee well-being. From the control center, staff monitor all 26 NewCold sites around the world. The facility features 555 solar panels, energy-efficient systems, and a dedicated training center for talent development. More than 300 professionals from 35 countries work here every day on the future of cold chain logistics. During the opening, Breda’s mayor, Paul Depla, described the GISC as an important driver of regional economic growth and employment.

World first in Dinteloord

A short drive away in Dinteloord, the second celebration took place. Here stands NewCold’s new frozen warehouse: 43 meters tall, fully automated, and completely off-grid. Thanks to a collaboration with the neighboring vegetable breeding company Rijk Zwaan, the facility runs on an environmentally friendly energy source that produces far fewer emissions than the regular power grid. Remarkably, the warehouse has already been operating before its own grid connection was completed—a world first.

“We’re proud of our newest location, and for good reason, we call it our flagship warehouse,” said Jonas Swarttouw, Managing Director Europe. “The warehouse is fully operated by a local team. Thanks to our automated systems, we can store 134,000 pallets on just 32,000 square meters using nine pallet cranes. Traditional warehouses would typically need three times as much space. Our flagship proves that sustainability and efficiency can go hand in hand. It also strengthens our collaboration with leading food producers such as Lamb Weston.” Strategically located in Dinteloord, the site offers excellent links to producers and the ports of Rotterdam, Moerdijk, and Antwerp.
