New strategic agenda for food security

  • 13 July 2026

The Netherlands is food secure, but we absolutely cannot afford to sit back. That is according to State Secretary Silvio Erkens of the Ministry of LVVN. Today, he is presenting the outline of the strategic food security agenda. Geopolitical tensions, climate change, and cyberattacks demand a more resilient food system. The government will finalize the agenda before the summer of 2027.

Focus on technological innovation

The cabinet is committed to a strong Dutch processing industry. Innovations such as robotics and digitalization must significantly increase efficiency. Through the Agrofood Innovation Agenda, the government is incentivizing these new technologies. The sector needs to stay ahead of the curve in artificial intelligence and biotechnology. This strengthens both the competitive position and the earning capacity of the industry.

Reducing reliance on imports

The Netherlands is partly dependent on imported products. The ministry is currently mapping out the risks associated with soy, fertilizer, and energy. The cabinet wants to reduce these strategic dependencies in the near future. This will be achieved through domestic production and better utilization of residual flows. Sourcing imports from a wider range of countries should also improve security.

Food supply as critical infrastructure

The failure of a single link has an immediate impact on the food supply. Therefore, the government and the private sector are working together on better preparedness. A National Food Security Crisis Plan is being introduced to establish clear roles and responsibilities. Additionally, the food supply must become part of the critical infrastructure. This ensures the chain keeps functioning, even in times of crisis.
