Nepluvi sees opportunities for poultry exports to China

  • 16 April 2025

The European poultry sector sees real opportunities in China, now that the country has imposed import tariffs on chicken from the United States. Gert-Jan Oplaat, chairman of both NEPLUVI and the European trade association AVEC, emphasized during the NEPLUVI General Assembly that the sector is ready to respond to this shift in demand.

Demand for wings and feet

According to Oplaat, China is particularly interested in chicken wings and feet—products with little demand in Europe. “This presents a unique opportunity for us to serve this market in a sustainable and efficient way,” he stated. With global trade flows shifting, space is opening up for European suppliers.

Market access still developing

Although access to the Chinese market is still in development, NEPLUVI has been working closely with the Dutch government for years to remove trade barriers. Oplaat pointed out that recent geopolitical developments underline how important it is to open this market. Additional effort is now being put into this.

Quality as a selling point

Oplaat noted that the European sector adheres to high standards of quality and sustainability. “Our sector continuously invests in animal welfare, food safety, and environmentally friendly production methods. This makes us a reliable trading partner for countries like China, which are placing increasing value on these aspects.”
