Millions more in subsidies for meat and dairy advertising

  • 18 April 2024

The subsidies for advertising campaigns within the European food sector reveal a notable shift towards animal products, as shown by the most recent funding round of the European Union. Nearly half of the total budget of 143 million euros for the promotion of food products is allocated to meat and dairy.

Increase in subsidies for meat and dairy

The distribution of funds indicates that out of the 143 million euros, 46 million is specifically reserved for advertising campaigns focused on meat and dairy products. Additionally, there is an allocation of nearly 29 million euros for campaigns promoting meat, which is double the amount from 2022 and the highest since 2021. Following a decline in advertising expenditure last year, there has been a significant recovery in funding this year.

Decline in plant-based promotions

In contrast to the increase in subsidies for meat and dairy products, there is a decrease in the funding for plant-based advertising campaigns. While in 2022, 73 million euros were allocated to this sector, this amount has dropped to 68 million in 2023. This decline continues the trend visible since 2021.

The financial decisions of the European Commission in these subsidy rounds raise questions about the alignment of financial incentives with the EU's broader climate and health ambitions. Dier&Recht once again urges the European Commission: take your own ambitions seriously and stop hindering the transition.
