Albert Heijn reduces CO2e emissions with new meat range

  • 17 April 2024

Albert Heijn is taking a new step towards making its meat products more sustainable. The supermarket chain is introducing a range of meats that significantly reduce CO2e emissions. The selection includes combinations of chicken and beef, as well as products enhanced with added beef protein. These innovations are not only more environmentally friendly but also more cost-effective than traditional beef.

Lower emission minced meat and burgers

The well-known half-and-half minced meat, traditionally a blend of pork and beef, now welcomes a more sustainable variant. The new minced meat combines beef from Dutch pasture-grazed cows with chicken awarded a 1-star 'Better Life' rating. These products emit at least 37% less CO2e per kilogram than their regular beef counterparts. The supermarket is also offering a special burger in this eco-friendly line.

Additionally, Albert Heijn is expanding its range to include seven types of meat products enriched with beef protein. This addition is expected to reduce CO2e emissions by 9.3 kton annually.

Price and quality

The new products are not only better for the environment, they are also priced more attractively. They are cheaper than the regular AH Hamburger, AH Beef Minced Meat, and AH Chipolata, making it easier for consumers to choose more sustainable meat options.

Anita Scholte op Reimer, Director of Sustainability & Quality at Albert Heijn, highlights the win-win situation: "This technological advancement, achieved with our supply chain partners, significantly reduces climate impact. Moreover, there is no noticeable difference in taste, while the customer pays less." This initiative underscores Albert Heijn's commitment to a more sustainable future where quality remains affordable for everyone.
