McDonald’s, Farm Frites and Rabobank commit to regenerative farming

  • 02 June 2025

On International Potato Day, McDonald’s Netherlands, Farm Frites and Rabobank signed a five-year partnership agreement. Their shared goal: making the Dutch potato supply chain more sustainable through regenerative agriculture. The partners will invest jointly in securing both the quality and availability of the Dutch-grown potato. The initiative builds on Farm Frites’ Future Farming Program, which now includes 80 participating growers.

Mounting pressure on potato farming

Climate change is increasing the pressure on potato farming. Heat stress, drought and heavy rainfall are reducing yields and increasing the risk of crop failure. In response, Farm Frites launched the Future Farming Program in 2023. The program provides growers with knowledge, hands-on experience and financial support. According to sustainability manager Hens Gunneman, the partnership reflects a shared responsibility for sustainability: “With support and investment from McDonald’s and Rabobank, growers can take their sustainable ambitions to the next level.”

Consistent fry quality starts with healthy soil

McDonald’s sells large volumes of French Fries each year, requiring a steady supply of high-quality potatoes. According to McDonald’s Netherlands, joining the program is a natural step. “Healthy soil retains moisture better and is more resilient to weather extremes,” says sustainability manager Jerôme de la Chambre. Rabobank supports the program through interest rate discounts for frontrunners and favourable terms for transition loans. “The use of clear KPIs and rewarding growers for measurable progress fits well with our approach,” says Nicoline van Gerrevink, Head Food System Transition at Rabobank.
