Mars and ofi focus on net zero cocoa production

  • 16 April 2026

Mars and ofi are further expanding their collaboration in cocoa. The companies are focusing on climate action in Ecuador. The aim is to reduce the environmental footprint of cocoa while strengthening farmers. The partnership runs from 2025 through 2029.

Focus on regenerative agriculture

In the first phase, more than 960 farmers are taking part. They operate across over 9,000 hectares of farmland. The project is taking place in regions such as El Oro and Guayas. Farmers are shifting from monoculture to multistrata agroforestry. This cultivation method mimics natural forest ecosystems. It supports microorganisms and pollinators and helps limit pests.

Farmers are also gaining access to a range of tools. These include low-carbon fertilizers and improved crop residue management. Biochar is also being applied. These measures are aimed at improving soil health and reducing emissions. At the same time, cocoa production is expected to increase.

Collaboration with shared climate goals

Mars and ofi are building on a partnership of more than fifteen years. Both companies work with SBTi-validated climate targets. They are aiming for net zero emissions by 2050.

Benjamin Guilbert of Mars says: “We appreciate ofi’s continued commitment to helping Mars realize our vision of a more modern, inclusive and sustainable cocoa system.”
Andrew Brooks of ofi emphasizes the practical side: “By making these practices more accessible to farmers, we aim to lower the barriers to implementation and reduce input costs.”

Impact in cocoa communities

In addition to farmers, surrounding communities are also benefiting. This is estimated to involve around 4,800 people. The measures are focused on strengthening resilience in cocoa farming.

According to Pedro Amaral of Mars, this requires joint effort: “Having Net Zero targets validated by SBTi enables a bold framework for Mars and ofi to invest together for the long term.”

ofi operates under its sustainability strategy ‘Choices for Change’. This focuses on farmers, communities, climate action and the regeneration of ecosystems.
