Mars and FrieslandCampina have initiated a new collaboration focused on accelerating the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in dairy production for Mars. This partnership offers additional rewards for member dairy farms committed to sustainability. The goal is to achieve a 33 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 and up to 50 percent by 2030 compared to 2015 levels.
FrieslandCampina has been supplying essential dairy ingredients to Mars for over 30 years for well-known brands such as M&M's®, SNICKERS®, and TWIX®. In this new collaboration, member dairy farms of the FrieslandCampina Development Group will specifically work for Mars. Mars compensates the dairy farmers for implementing and accelerating innovative measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Examples include feed additives that reduce methane emissions.
Sanne Griffioen, Director Farm Sustainability at FrieslandCampina, emphasizes the importance of this partnership: "At FrieslandCampina, we aim to provide nutrition that is produced in harmony with people and the planet. Partnerships like this are essential for supporting dairy farmers and accelerating sustainability efforts on the farm."
FrieslandCampina is a leader in data-driven decision-making and focuses on continuous improvement. More than 14,000 member dairy farmers own FrieslandCampina through the cooperative and are rewarded for their achievements in animal health, climate, biodiversity, and grazing. Already, 600 dairy farms have joined the Development Group, which focuses on further reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Amanda Davies, Chief R&D, Procurement, and Sustainability Officer at Mars Snacking, underscores the importance of this collaboration: "Dairy significantly contributes to the greenhouse gas emissions of our Mars Snacking business. Collaborating with partners like FrieslandCampina is crucial for achieving our Mars Net Zero ambition. Through innovative and climate-smart practices, we can create a more sustainable future for dairy together."
