Nijsen and Insect Engineers join Insect Valley Europe

  • 18 July 2024

Nijsen and Insect Engineers, leading players in insect farming and protein transition, have joined Insect Valley Europe (IVE). This initiative, supported by Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo, the Province of Limburg, and Gezondste Regio, promotes sustainable insect farming in Southeast Netherlands. The collaboration marks a significant step towards sustainable protein production and strengthens the region as an innovative agricultural hub.

Alternative to intensive livestock farming

North Limburg is known as the 'Healthiest Region' with a strong agricultural sector. However, intensive livestock farming brings environmental challenges, such as high nitrogen and CO2 emissions. Insects offer a sustainable alternative for producing animal proteins. They can be fed with local waste streams, have a higher feed conversion rate, and emit lower greenhouse gases and ammonia than traditional livestock farming. Moreover, insects can be processed into high-quality products for the animal feed, food, and pharmaceutical industries.

Insect farming as the future

The vision for the future is that insect farming will play a crucial role in closing food chains. Combining waste streams, technology, and market opportunities in a way that fits the regional context and legislation requires extensive knowledge and experience. High-quality technological expertise and resources are essential to contribute to this both in the short and long term. With Nijsen and Insect Engineers on board, Insect Valley Europe strengthens its role as an innovative platform in the insect sector. This collaboration stimulates regional partnerships and investments in research, resulting in sustainable farming concepts that promote protein transition and agricultural sustainability.

Combining expertise

"We are proud to welcome Nijsen and Insect Engineers to Insect Valley Europe," says Willem van Hoof, Business Development Manager of IVE. "Their expertise and drive for innovation strengthen our joint mission to further develop and sustain the insect sector." Insect Valley Europe will continue to facilitate collaborations and develop new initiatives that contribute to a sustainable future. The addition of Nijsen and Insect Engineers is a significant step towards innovative and sustainable protein production.
