Lineage recently announced the $50,000 grand prize for their Food Chain Innovation Challenge. This competition, aimed at solutions to combat food waste, is part of the company’s efforts to reduce post-harvest food loss. The announcement comes at a time when global food insecurity is increasing. It is expected that by 2028, nearly one billion people will face food shortages.
The Food Chain Innovation Challenge will take place in three international cities: London, Amsterdam, and San Francisco. Students and start-ups can present their innovative technologies and data solutions to a renowned jury, including experts from various sectors. Each event, including the one in Amsterdam on November 19, provides participants with the opportunity to showcase their ideas to industry professionals. Regional winners will receive $5,000 and advance to the grand final in December, where the overall winner will compete for the grand prize and a six-month incubator programme.
During the Amsterdam event at the NEMO Science Museum, Lineage's European president Harld Peters will serve as a jury member. Toine Timmermans, director of Samen Tegen Voedselverspilling, along with other prominent experts, will also evaluate the innovations. Timmermans emphasized the importance of this competition in light of the UN’s 2030 goals to halve food waste. According to him, the ideas and technologies presented during the challenge are crucial to making the food chain more sustainable.
