Leaders in the out-of-home sector will take concrete measures in the coming years to make packaging more sustainable and reduce litter. In collaboration with the Knowledge Institute for Sustainable Packaging (KIDV), a Sector Plan for Sustainable Packaging has been drawn up. The aim of the companies is, among other things, not to use unnecessary packaging and to use packaging materials that are reusable and/or recyclable as much as possible. In addition, they want to spend less on single-use products, such as straws and disposable cutlery. The sector plan was published by the KIDV on 15 January.
The out-of-home sector strives for a circular system in which food and beverages can be consumed out-of-home and on the road in a responsible manner. The sector plan sets targets for 2022 and 2025 to use less packaging (reduction and reuse), to be aware of raw materials (resource) and to recycle better. In addition to standard packaging, ambitions are also set for typical on-the-go packaging such as bags, napkins, plastic forks, etc. and disposable products.
The sector plan has been assessed by the KIDV Board of Independent Experts. The Board states that the sector has set ambitious goals to make packaging more sustainable, particularly in the field of prevention. In doing so, the sector is going against the general trend of packaging more and more food in portable and small packaging.
