Jumbo sees the need for joint investment in sustainability data

  • 02 October 2024

Starting in 2025, the food and drugstore sectors will exclusively use the GS1 datapool for sharing packaging data. This industry-wide agreement has been made by retailers and suppliers within the strategic council of GS1 Netherlands. Inge Vening, manager of data analytics & product management at Jumbo, emphasizes the importance of collaboration to make progress in sustainability. “We need each other to move forward.”

Efficiency and data quality

The use of the GS1 datapool not only enhances efficiency but also improves the quality of product data. By standardizing the data model and using built-in controls, accurate data is ensured. This accuracy is critical for the smooth operation of automated processes within the logistics chain. Vening stresses the importance of correct packaging dimensions to prevent disruptions in Jumbo’s automated distribution center.

Sustainability goals and transparency

Sustainability is a key focus at Jumbo, which is not only aimed at operational optimization but also at gaining insights into customer behavior and monitoring sustainability performance. The growing demand for transparency from consumers and regulations, such as the CSRD, plays a significant role in this. Customers want to know more about the social and environmental impact of products. According to Vening, it is crucial for retailers and suppliers to agree on how this data is shared. “Collecting and sharing data can be more complex than expected, but collaboration is essential to meet our sustainability goals and improve efficiency.”
