Never before have they been available: potatoes grown on Dutch soil, with care for both land and farmer. Jumbo takes the lead and puts its weight behind regenerative agriculture. No vague promises, but real products, alongside a firm long-term commitment to growers.
The potatoes are part of Jumbo’s new fresh produce range, ‘Van goede aarde’. Every product in this line is grown using regenerative methods. That means focusing on restoring nature, using water and nutrients wisely, and giving biodiversity the attention it deserves. Jumbo offers long-term guarantees to farmers so they can keep investing in these techniques, and share their knowledge with fellow growers.
Today, farmer Jeroen Klompe handed over the first crate of potatoes to Jumbo board member Tim Hehenkamp and franchise owner Jeroen Lemkes. Klompe: “Regeneratieve landbouw is een holistische manier van denken en heeft zoveel te bieden voor de samenleving…”
Jumbo Foodmarkt in Dordrecht gets the scoop: the potatoes will be on shelves there starting 18 August. The rest of the Netherlands and Belgium follows in mid-October. At that point, the potatoes, packed in 1.5 kg bags, will be available in all 732 Jumbo stores and online.
Like the regeneratively grown carrots introduced earlier, the potatoes carry the On the Way to PlanetProof label. Another step in Jumbo’s efforts to make its fresh produce more sustainable, and locally sourced.
Regenerative farming relies on the craftsmanship and entrepreneurial drive of the grower. They steer their own course, aiming for targets like improved water quality or reduced CO₂ emissions. Jumbo supports these efforts, among other things through its new platform ‘(H)eerlijk van Dichtbij’. During a special harvest event, the retailer thanked the farmers contributing to this approach.
“As a family business, Jumbo believes it’s important to take good care of farmland…”, said Hehenkamp. With 75% of its fresh products sourced from the Netherlands, marked by the ‘Dichtbij’ label, Jumbo makes clear where it’s heading: more sustainable food, close to home, with the farmer in the driver’s seat.
