Italy and Germany strengthen algae sector

  • 10 February 2026

Algae are gaining a firmer position on the European agenda. Germany and Italy signed a joint declaration of intent in Rome on strategic cooperation in the algae sector. The focus is on sustainable development, research, and innovation.

European ambitions around algae

The declaration was signed by German Federal Minister Alois Rainer and Italian Minister Francesco Lollobrigida. The aim is to develop the sector sustainably and strengthen research and innovation.

Rainer emphasized the importance of European cooperation. “Algae offer enormous innovation potential that we in Europe must resolutely utilize.” According to him, the German-Italian partnership lays the groundwork for further expansion of a sustainable algae sector. He also referred to the EU-Algae declaration, which Germany initiated jointly with France.

The initiative aligns with broader European objectives. These include food security, decarbonization, and the circular economy. In this context, algae are regarded as a strategic resource.

Production, food and feed

The cooperation focuses on sustainable production systems for macroalgae and microalgae. It specifically mentions integrated multitrophic aquaculture and photobioreactors.

Research into new high-quality products and compounds is also part of the agenda. In addition, both countries aim to stimulate market development for algae-based products intended for human consumption.

There is also a commitment to expanding the use of algae as an additive in animal feed and as a sustainable food source for aquaculture.

Trade and knowledge exchange

The declaration includes agreements on economic cooperation. Germany and Italy intend to promote trade relations and investment in the sector. Industrial partnerships and access to European and international markets are also addressed.

In addition, there will be a focus on training and knowledge exchange among companies, researchers, and institutions. Both countries express the ambition to strengthen international cooperation and develop integrated value chains, including through a biorefinery approach.
