The Environmental and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) is monitoring the new legislation against disposable plastic that took effect on July 1. Entrepreneurs must comply with the new regulations on disposable plastic cups and containers. If a business owner makes insufficient efforts to make the necessary adjustments, such as charging for plastic packaging or offering a reusable alternative, the ILT will take enforcement action.
It is important for the entire chain to reduce the impact of disposable plastic on the environment. The ILT is monitoring developments and has been holding exploratory talks with various parties involved in the market to this end since the beginning of this year. These include the producers of disposable plastic, suppliers of office coffee concepts, large hospitality companies, caterers and collectors. The ILT works risk-based and on the basis of signals sent to inspectors.
Senior Inspector for Waste & Circular Economy Gert van Rootselaar, who supervises compliance with the new SUP legislation together with other inspectors: "We have informative conversations with entrepreneurs about the rules. These conversations are recorded in an inspection letter with agreements. In case of violations, a consideration is always made looking at the behavior of the violator and the severity of the violation, in accordance with the National Enforcement Strategy."
Based on the behavior and severity of the violation, an appropriate intervention is deployed. Warnings are possible, but also administrative or criminal action, in which an order under penalty or fine can be imposed by the Public Prosecutor. In the coming period it will become clear in which sectors things are going well and in which not yet.
