A new study conducted by HelloFresh shows that every second person throws away food worth an average of 20 euros once or twice a month. The research shows that consumers often throw away food because of the fear of getting sick, even if the products are still safe to consume. In addition, confusion around expiration dates also causes waste.
Although half of the respondents feel responsible for reducing food waste, there is a need for more education and an improved food labeling system. The survey found that more than a third of participants feel that the current food-labeling system does not help reduce waste.
HelloFresh advocates dynamic food labeling using time-temperature indicators (TTI). In collaboration with Keep-It®, Wageningen University and the Thünen Institute, HelloFresh tested TTI solutions, which resulted in a potential of 15% reduction in food waste and positive responses from consumers. To implement this innovative solution, regulatory change is needed at the European level.
HelloFresh calls on policy makers to support pilot projects and work towards smarter date marking on food packaging. Concerted efforts can reduce food waste and protect the planet.
The survey was conducted among 7,500 people in five European countries.
