Fruit and vegetable sector shows resilience in 2024

  • 15 January 2025

Extreme weather and geopolitical tensions made 2024 a challenging year for the Dutch fruit and vegetable sector. Nevertheless, the industry once again proved itself to be a reliable link for European retail and wholesale markets. Rising imports and exports highlighted the sector’s remarkable resilience and further strengthened trust in Dutch produce.

Rising import and export values

The total production value of Dutch fruits and vegetables reached €4.7 billion in 2024. Imports increased by 4% to €11 billion, while exports grew by 3%, reaching €15.6 billion. This growth underscores the pivotal role of the Netherlands in international trade. Spain, Peru, and South Africa remained key suppliers, but China, Kenya, and Chile also recorded significant growth. Garlic, avocados, and blueberries from these countries were notable contributors to the rising import figures.

New opportunities in export markets

Germany, Belgium, and the United Kingdom continued to be the largest export markets, accounting for 35%, 9%, and 8% of total exports, respectively. At the same time, exports to Austria (+17%), Belgium (+11%), and Spain (+9%) achieved impressive growth rates. Grapes, avocados, and tomatoes were key drivers behind this expansion.
