Food waste tackled with Internet of Things

  • 24 January 2020

As a result of poor control of the conditions during transport of fresh products, there is a great loss of value. In fruit transport this is already 5-8%. TNO and Wageningen Food & Biobased Research are leading a consortium of parties that will investigate what the application of Internet of Things (IoT) in fresh logistics can mean.

Goals

The consortium focuses on improving the use of existing sensors, but also on the use of new types of affordable sensors. The aim is to achieve a better understanding of the ripening status of perishable products during transport. Another study focuses on the extent to which logistical decision-making can be adapted to the ripening status of fresh products. Think for example of priority handling at terminals, avoiding ripening at ripening stations or speeding up hinterland transport to the retail channel.

The project has recently started and has a duration of 2 years.
