Flowpack for meat contributes to sustainability

  • 10 May 2021

Packaging fresh meat in a flow pack instead of a dish fits in well with the sustainability targets the Dutch meat industry wants to achieve: 30% energy savings in 2030 compared to 2010.

Central Butcher ProMessa is the first meat producer in the Netherlands to pack fresh meat in a flow pack using an Omori flow packer. This reduces the plastic consumption of meat packaging by more than 70 percent. The first products - ground beef and minced meat - in this packaging have been in Deen supermarkets since November 2020. "The packaging meets the wishes of approximately three-quarters of consumers, who see plastic reduction as a responsibility of retailers and producers," says Harold Rouweler, managing director of ProMessa.

"The flowpack helps our customers, various supermarket chains, enormously in achieving their sustainability targets."

Sustainability

Sustainability is more topical than ever. Supermarkets, too, have this theme high on their agendas. Consumers are increasingly asking critical questions and packaging materials are under scrutiny. Packaging has important functions when it comes to protection, shelf life, convenience and food safety, but also environmental impact. Driven by new legislation and increasing market demand, we, Omori, developed a proven packaging concept into a flowpack for fresh meat.

The flowpack

By using a thin mono-material film instead of relatively thick trays, a film reduction of 70% can be achieved. In addition, both the supply of packaging material and the packaged end products are much less bulky. This results in savings in transport movements. When it comes to preventing food waste, there is also a positive contribution. This flowpack packaging offers meat the required protection and guarantees good shelf life and freshness.

Packaging fresh meat, such as minced meat, in flow packs requires technical machine knowledge as well as technological product knowledge. Extending the shelf life and retaining the red colour of meat are very essential. Therefore, we examine how the product can be entered in a hygienic and clean way. And how the product quality can best be guaranteed. Packaging is an important aspect in the chain!
