Five French companies launch InterVeg coalition

  • 22 May 2025

France is now home to a coalition for plant-based food. Five industry players have established InterVeg, aiming to steer policy, consumers and the sector as a whole towards sustainable proteins.
Hari&Co, Accro, HappyVore, La Vie, and Swap Food have joined forces under the name InterVeg—the first French coalition focused on plant-based food. Their shared mission: making plant-based meals a natural part of everyday life in France.

According to InterVeg, a shift towards plant-based proteins could bring multiple benefits. For instance, it could reduce France’s dependence on meat imports—by up to 23% for beef and 44% for poultry. The coalition also points to several health benefits, such as lower risks of cardiovascular disease (-51%), type 2 diabetes (-34%) and colon cancer (-46%). By 2050, the food sector could cut CO₂ emissions by 49%, reduce the need for agricultural land by a factor of 3.3, and cut freshwater use in half.

Momentum from five different players

Founded in 2014, Hari&Co offers legume-based meat alternatives and works in partnership with Groupe Avril. Accro, launched in 2019 and backed by Roquette, produces plant-based options from pea and wheat protein in a modern facility in northern France. HappyVore, previously known as Les Nouveaux Fermiers, is B Corp certified and employs 117 people. La Vie—owned by Nestlé—focuses on plant-based alternatives to bacon, ham, and lardons. Swap Food (formerly Umiami) replaces chicken with a plant-based product and is active in Europe and Chicago.

New investments in plant-based innovation

La Vie raised €25 million in a funding round, partly through equity crowdfunding, with investors including Zintinus and Sparkfood. Bel is investing €7.5 million in an R&D centre as part of the Ferments du Futur project, a €9 million public-private partnership. The company aims to generate half of its revenue from plant-based products by 2050, driven by faster innovation through new technologies.
