In the second quarter of 2020, fewer calves and pigs were slaughtered in Dutch slaughterhouses than in the same period a year earlier. The number of calves slaughtered fell by 14 percent (59,000) and the number of pigs by 11 percent (more than 400,000). Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this on the basis of provisional figures for meat production in 2020.
The decrease in the number of calves and pigs slaughtered since March is related to the closure of the hotel and catering sector and lower exports as a result of the corona crisis. As a result, there was a lack of outlets for veal, part of which was stored in cold stores.
