Farmers launch campaign for affordable organic

  • 13 March 2026

Organic food often carries a higher price than conventional products. For many consumers, that difference is a barrier. With the campaign ‘Bio for Everyone – pay the same, get more’, organic farmers want to show that things can be done differently.

On March 21, farmers across the Netherlands will organize a nationwide action day. On their farms, they will sell organic potatoes and onions. At the same price as the non-organic varieties in the supermarket.

Organic at supermarket prices

During the action day, visitors can buy organic potatoes and onions at a lower price than usual. The price will match that of conventional products in the supermarket. According to the initiators, this shows that the price gap is not inevitable. That difference is precisely what keeps many consumers from choosing organic.

The initiative will take place at farms spread across the Netherlands. Visitors can buy products directly there that would normally carry a higher price on supermarket shelves.

Attention for a sustainable food system

With the campaign, organic farmers are drawing attention to a fair and sustainable food system. According to the initiators, organic farming contributes to healthy soil.

Clean water and greater biodiversity are also mentioned. At the same time, farmers stress the importance of a fair price for sustainable production. Food waste also plays a role. When there is sufficient demand for organic products, less product goes unused.

Signal to retail

The initiators hope supermarkets and other retailers will take inspiration from the action. For example, by offering organic products more often at prices comparable to conventional alternatives.

In this way, a single action day can contribute to broader change in the market. The ambition is clear: organic should grow to at least a 15% market share by 2030.
