Exposure to chemicals via food too high

  • 09 May 2023

Exposure to a combination of chemicals via food and drinking water may seem too high, according to an exploratory study by RIVM commissioned by the European Commission. The researchers looked at the intake of four different substance groups, including heavy metals and flame retardants, for toddlers, children, young adults and women aged 18-45 in nine European countries.

The calculations show that intakes are higher than acceptable levels for all groups and in all countries. This could potentially pose health risks, but it is still unclear how great these risks are. More research is therefore needed to better understand this.

Mixture of substances

The European Commission is concerned about the possible risks of ingesting combinations of chemical substances and thinks this should be clarified soon. RIVM agrees and is therefore working on this topic in national and European projects.

In the European project ATHLETE, RIVM has already conducted an exploratory study on the risks of ingesting combinations of chemicals. The results and uncertainties have been shared with EFSA and the European Commission. The RIVM is now planning follow-up research together with foreign institutes, in which the measured values of the relevant chemicals in blood and urine samples will be examined and analysed.
