EU pork exports cut by 25%

  • 30 August 2022

EU pigmeat exports decreased by almost 25 percent in the first six months of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. A substantial growth in exports to Japan, Korea and the Philippines, among others, partly compensated for the sharp decline in exports to China.

Other large buyers

The decline of the euro has made EU pork more attractive to other Asian countries. Consequently, exports to the EU's other biggest buyers, the Philippines, Japan and South Korea, increased considerably. In percentage terms, the export growth to South Korea is the highest at 65.5%.

In terms of quantity, export growth to Japan is the highest at 45.4 percent. Exports to the Philippines grew by 36.8 percent. This makes the Philippines the second most important export country for the EU.

Smaller customers

Among smaller buyers, pork sales to Malaysia increased the most in percentage terms. The growth concerns 137. The increase to Taiwan is larger in terms of volume, but at 127% it is still slightly less than the increase to Malaysia. In addition, exports to Australia in particular saw an increase in quantity. This represents an increase of almost 73%.
