EU bans Bisphenol A in food contact materials

  • 29 December 2024

The European Commission has adopted a ban on Bisphenol A (BPA) in food contact materials. This decision follows concerns about potential health risks associated with the chemical, which is used in plastics and resins.

New food safety regulations

BPA is already banned in baby bottles within the EU, but this new ban goes much further. It covers products such as coatings on cans, reusable plastic bottles, and other kitchenware. Following positive advice from EU member states and a period of consultation within the Council and the European Parliament, the Commission approved the ban. The decision is based on recent scientific findings from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). EFSA concluded that BPA could harm the immune system, providing the foundation for stricter regulations.

Gradual transition for the industry

To allow the industry time to adapt, an 18-month transition period will apply. BPA use will only be temporarily permitted in exceptional cases where no alternatives are available. In addition to BPA, the ban also includes other bisphenols that have harmful effects on the reproductive and endocrine systems.

Focus on consumer protection

According to EU Commissioner Oliver Várhelyi, protecting consumers from harmful substances is a top priority: “With this ban, we are ensuring the safety of our citizens in food contact materials. This decision is based on solid scientific advice.”
