Energy innovation: opportunities for the food industry

  • 19 December 2025

Next year, the Netherlands will invest over €450 million in energy innovation. Innovation is essential for the energy transition and for a sustainable, strong, and internationally competitive Netherlands. The government aims to become less dependent on other countries while seizing new economic opportunities. For the food industry, where production processes consume a lot of energy, this creates opportunities to develop projects that reduce or make energy use more sustainable.

Subsidies for various projects

The budget is distributed across four existing programs. The MOOI program is intended for large collaborations between companies and knowledge institutions that research and develop practical system solutions. Projects focused on nuclear technology can also participate. For smaller research and development projects that contribute to a sustainable energy system or a circular industry, the EKOO program is available. The DEI+ program supports pilot and demonstration projects that reduce or make energy use more sustainable. This can be particularly relevant for food companies looking to make their production processes more efficient.

International collaboration and support

Dutch participants who want to collaborate internationally on European Clean Energy Transition Partnership projects can use the HEP program. Entrepreneurs and knowledge institutions, including those from the food industry, can turn to the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and Topsector Energie (TSE) for practical information, preparation, or project submission. The subsidy programs will open throughout the year, giving various types of projects the chance to participate.
