Ede building European hub for protein innovation

  • 22 September 2025

Ede is stepping up its game in the world of sustainable proteins. The NIZO site will transform over the coming years into a vibrant food innovation park. Startups, scale-ups, researchers, and companies will join forces here to develop new protein sources – and bring them to market faster.

New hotspot in Foodvalley

The plans are ambitious. The site will feature open-access facilities, including the food-grade pilot plant and the Biotechnology Fermentation Factory (BFF). This will allow not just lab research, but also testing, scaling up, and preparing products for market launch. “We are building a place where ideas can flourish faster,” says Bert Fintelman, who is responsible for the protein transition in Regio Foodvalley.

From knowledge to market

Wageningen will remain the go-to hub for research and education. Ede, meanwhile, will focus on the next step: making innovations market-ready. Together with Wageningen Campus and the Business Science Park, the new park will form a powerful triangle where knowledge, entrepreneurship, and production come closer together and reinforce one another.

Broadly supported initiative

The plans are backed by NIZO, the Province of Gelderland, the Municipality of Ede, Regio Foodvalley, and Oost NL. The exploratory study was presented on 17 September to provincial deputy Helga Witjes and other regional leaders. Nikolaas Vles, CEO of NIZO, sums up the goal clearly: “We want to grow into the leading European ecosystem for scaling up alternative proteins.” The next steps will focus on property development, setting up a dedicated facilities organization, and making the pilot plant fully independent – so that companies and knowledge institutes can make wide use of it.
