Dynamic discounting reduces food waste

  • 01 November 2022

In all Albert Heijn shops from 31 October 2022, customers can buy products with discounts ranging from 25%, 40% to 70%. The principle of these discounts is called dynamic discounting. Products approaching their best-before date are offered at a discount through this electronic system. This way, there is less food left on the shelves, less food is wasted and customers can choose products at reduced prices.

Dynamic discounting

Albert Heijn now has the digital alternative of the 35% sticker in all stores with self-scanning and electronic shelf tags: dynamic discounts on fresh products such as meat and chicken. The exact discount is automatically displayed on the electronic price tag. Discounts can range from 25%, 40% to 70%. With dynamic discounting, an algorithm developed by Albert Heijn automatically calculates the best discount to avoid leaving unsellable products at the end of the day. This way, less food is wasted and customers enjoy maximum benefits.

Preventing food waste

"'Making food better accessible together. For everyone', from our mission we do everything possible to reduce the amount of food waste as much as possible, both in our chains, in stores and with our customers. Increasingly discounting products throughout the day helps with this," said Henk van Harn, director of merchandising & sourcing at Albert Heijn. "We are constantly introducing new initiatives to prevent food waste. Often based on technology. Dynamic markdown is a good example of that. But we also have other initiatives to prevent food waste. Think of the recently introduced AH Remainers packs offered at an extra cheap price. With this nationwide initiative, we are expected to save another 4.5 million kilos of food waste a year."
