Dutch men reach annual salt limit by August

  • 19 August 2024

On August 16, 2024, Dutch men aged 18 to 50 had already consumed their maximum recommended salt intake for the entire year. This "Zoutmaxdag" (maximum salt day) highlights the alarming overconsumption of salt in the Netherlands. Foodwatch points out that men in this age group have consumed the recommended annual maximum amount of salt within just eight months, with four months still remaining in the year.

Overconsumption and health risks

Data from the RIVM shows that Dutch men consume an average of 8.0 grams of salt per day, which is 60% more than the WHO's recommended limit of 5.0 grams. This high level of salt consumption is not without consequences. Excessive salt intake increases the risk of serious health issues, such as hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and kidney damage. Additionally, it contributes to conditions like stomach cancer and osteoporosis.

Foodwatch calls for action

Foodwatch is urging for stricter regulations to reduce salt intake in the Netherlands. The current voluntary agreements between the government and the food industry have proven insufficient. Despite efforts, the average daily salt intake in the Netherlands has only decreased by 0.7 grams. Foodwatch stresses that legal measures are necessary to protect public health. Zoutmaxdag should serve as a wake-up call for both policymakers and the food industry to take urgent and effective steps.
