Dutch meat consumption increases in 2019

  • 22 October 2020

The amount of meat and meat products consumed in the Netherlands in 2019 is higher than in 2018. A slight increase in meat consumption was also observed in 2018. The total consumption of meat and meat products (based on carcass weight) per capita in the Netherlands in 2019 was 77.8 kg. This is more than half a kilo higher than consumption in 2018. The main part of the increase is in the consumption of poultry meat and a small part of pork meat.

Most consumed types of meat

The amount of meat consumed per person per year is around 39 kilos. Half of the carcass weight is used as a rule of thumb for the level of consumption. Pork is most commonly eaten at around 18.5 kilos per year. Then chicken meat with 11.5 kilos, beef with 8 kilos and other types of meat (veal, goat, sheep and horsemeat) together account for a little over 1 kilo per year.

Catering and tourism

Eating out and the consumption of meat by foreign tourists in the Netherlands count in the figures. It is precisely in the catering industry that people often choose meat. Recent scientific research, among 420 German respondents, confirms this: Flexitarians, who regularly choose a vegetable burger at home, do often choose meat when they go out for dinner.
