From 2025, consumers in the Netherlands and Belgium will be able to purchase frozen Dutch-grown edamame beans at Jumbo Supermarkets. This is the result of a collaboration between the supermarket chain and Dutch farmers, supported by the Plant Protein Forward initiative. This programme, in partnership with Foodvalley NL, Rabobank, and the Interprovincial Protein Consultation, aims to promote the cultivation and sales of protein-rich crops in the Netherlands.
Growing edamame in the Netherlands not only offers a local alternative to the Asian variety but is also more sustainable. While edamame farming in Asia is often linked to deforestation and heavy pesticide use, Dutch farmers have developed more environmentally friendly methods. The shorter transport distance further contributes to a reduced CO₂ footprint. Jumbo views this sustainable development as an opportunity to offer its customers a protein-rich, plant-based alternative.
Through this partnership with Jumbo, Dutch edamame farmers will gain more security regarding their market and pricing. This provides them with the opportunity to invest in modern agricultural techniques, allowing them to increase yields and improve the efficiency of their fields. Additionally, edamame has proven to be a valuable addition to Dutch crop rotations due to its positive impact on soil fertility and biodiversity.
