Plant-based foods represent a sustainable vision for our future, with the potential to significantly reduce our climate footprint. In line with the Official Dietary Guidelines, the Danish government is championing the enhancement of its plant-based food and agriculture sector. This initiative seeks to inspire every link in the food chain, from farmers and producers to consumers.
"Plant-based foods" encompass a broad spectrum, including grains, fruits, and vegetables, as well as fungi, algae, and beneficial microorganisms. To solidify the action plan, comprehensive research was undertaken involving esteemed institutions like Aalborg University and Copenhagen University. They provided industry insights, developmental trajectories, and even case studies from countries with burgeoning plant-based sectors.
Collaboration was paramount: around 30 stakeholders across diverse sectors shared invaluable insights, ensuring a well-rounded plan.
Key objectives of the government's plan include:
Strengthening the Base: Bolster the Danish raw material foundation through targeted subsidies and developmental initiatives.
Bolstering the Value Chain: Reinforce the entire plant-based value chain, emphasizing cohesion at each step.
Boosting Sales: Aiming to elevate the sales from the 2021 benchmark of 32 billion DKK annually.
Promoting Exports: In 2023 and 2024, intensify the branding of the Danish plant-based sector through Food Nation, backed by Danish embassies.
Innovating Through Research: Collaborate between the government and stakeholders to position Denmark as a global leader in plant-based food production.
With this action plan, Denmark is strategically positioned to be at the forefront of the plant-based revolution.
