Debate reignites over use of meat-related terms for vega products

  • 11 September 2025

On 8 September 2025, the agriculture committee of the European Parliament voted in favour of banning meat-related terms for plant-based products. Words like "burger", "sausage" and "steak" would no longer be allowed. The full Parliament is expected to vote later this year.

The proposal, submitted by MEP Celine Imart, resurfaced unexpectedly, despite being rejected in 2020. At the time, the European Court found existing regulations sufficiently clear.

Debate continues despite scientific opposition

The European Commission is working on a separate proposal that would prohibit terms like "chicken" and "beef", while still allowing "burger" and "sausage".

According to the Vegetarian Union, consumers are not confused by the terminology. Nevertheless, the issue remains on the political agenda.

The legislation was originally intended to support farmers but has since been broadened. EASAC, on the other hand, calls for support of plant-based alternatives in light of climate and public health concerns.
